Overview: What is High Manganese Steel?

High Manganese Steel, commonly known as Hadfield Steel, is a non-magnetic austenitic steel with approximately 12–14% manganese and 1.0–1.4% carbon. It exhibits exceptional work-hardening ability, becoming harder with impact and wear. This makes it a preferred choice in mining, cement, rail, crusher liners, and military armor components.

This datasheet provides standardized technical details for engineers, OEMs, and procurement heads involved in material selection, fabrication, or compliance documentation.

Standard Specification References (ISO, BIS, EN, ASTM)

Standard Equivalent Designation Source / Note
DIN EN 10027 X120Mn12, 1.3401 German / EU standard for austenitic Mn steel
ASTM A128 Gr. B2 Hadfield Steel Equivalent (USA) Widely used in North American industries
ISO 21635:2018 Austenitic Mn steel for structural use Global ISO standard – includes cold forming
IS 276:2000 Austenitic Manganese Steel (India) Bureau of Indian Standards – IS Code
IRClass Guidelines High Mn Steel for Cryogenic Services Indian Register of Shipping compliance reference

Chemical Composition (Typical Range)

Element Range (%)
Carbon (C) 1.00 – 1.40
Manganese (Mn) 11.00 – 14.00
Silicon (Si) 0.30 – 1.00
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.07
Sulphur (S) ≤ 0.05
Iron (Fe) Balance

Values may vary slightly depending on rolling mill process and supplier customization.

Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)

Property Value / Range
Yield Strength (0.2%) 350–450 MPa
Ultimate Tensile Strength 750–950 MPa
Elongation ≥ 30%
Hardness (Annealed) 220–250 HB
Work Hardened Surface Up to 550–600 BHN
Impact Resistance Very High (Charpy Tested)
Magnetic Behavior Non-magnetic (Fully Austenitic)

Fabrication, Cutting, and Welding

Process Details
Cutting Requires plasma cutting or laser with special tips due to hardness
Welding Preheat NOT required, but special austenitic electrodes recommended
Machining Extremely difficult – not recommended unless hardened state is avoided
Bending/Forming Cold forming is possible up to limited radii; annealing not typical

Refer ISO 21635:2018 for forming behavior and thickness-specific bend radius.

Application Summary (By Industry)

Industry Component Examples
Mining Crusher liners, Jaw plates, Screens
Cement Drag chains, Liners, Chutes
Railways Crossings, Turnouts, Switches
Recycling Hammer tips, Shears, Jaws
Shot Blasting Cabinet plates, Guard panels
Defense Anti-ballistic shielding, Bunkers

In annealed form, the hardness is 220–250 HB, but it can work harden up to 600 BHN with repeated impact.

It is extremely hard to machine due to its work hardening nature. Specialized tools or annealed state is required for limited machining.

Yes, IS 276:2000 is the BIS standard, but many suppliers match DIN 1.3401 or ASTM A128 properties.

With proper certification, it’s used for LNG tank shielding due to non-magnetic, low-temperature toughness.
