A high manganese steel plate is a non-magnetic, austenitic alloy steel that contains 12–14% manganese and 1–1.4% carbon — making it exceptionally tough, ductile, and resistant to impact and abrasion. The more stress or shock it receives, the harder the surface gets — a property known as work-hardening.
These plates were originally developed by Sir Robert Hadfield and are still referred to as Hadfield manganese steel. Unlike regular wear plates, manganese steel does not crack under shock — making it ideal for crusher jaws, hammer heads, dragline buckets, earthmoving blades, armor panels, and agricultural tools.
