Hadfield Manganese Steel Plates

Steel That Gets Stronger with Every Hit — Explore Hadfield Manganese Steel

In industries where impact and abrasion destroy ordinary steel, Hadfield Manganese Steel proves its unmatched worth. First developed in 1882 by Sir Robert Hadfield, this high-manganese austenitic steel is engineered to work-harden under stress — making it tougher with every blow. Whether you’re building a crusher liner, a rail crossing, a shot blast deflector, or a vault wall, Hadfield Steel offers superior resilience where failure is not an option.

At Hindustan Steel Corporation, we supply genuine Hadfield-grade plates with 12–14% Mn content — cut-to-size and ready for both domestic and international clients.

What Is Hadfield Steel?

Hadfield Steel is an austenitic manganese alloy with 12–14% manganese and 1–1.4% carbon. Unlike conventional steel, Hadfield grade exhibits work-hardening: it becomes progressively harder when exposed to repeated impact or pressure.

  • Initial Hardness: ~200 BHN
  • Work-Hardened: Up to 550 BHN
  • Fully austenitic and non-magnetic
  • High ductility and fracture resistance
  • Ideal for high-load, high-impact applications

Typical Applications of Hadfield Manganese Steel

  1. Mining & Quarrying: Jaw plates, cone crusher liners, hoppers, and grizzlies
  2. Mining: Jaw plates, buckets, dump liners
  3. Shot Blasting Equipment: Wheel housings, liners, blast tiles
  4. Power Plants: Ash handling liners, coal feeders
  5. Security & Defense: Bank safes, vault walls, prison bars
  6. Agricultural Tools: Cultivator blades, earth-moving attachments

Chemical Composition of Hadfield Steel

Element Range
Manganese (Mn) 12.0 – 14.0%
Carbon (C) 1.0 – 1.4%
Silicon (Si) 0.3 – 0.8%
Iron (Fe) Balance
Sulphur & Phos < 0.05%

These components allow the steel to maintain a tough, non-brittle structure even under extreme service.

Physical & Mechanical Properties

Property Value
Hardness (as supplied) 180 – 220 BHN
Work-hardened Hardness Up to 550 BHN
Tensile Strength 800 – 1100 MPa
Elongation (%) 30 – 50%
Magnetic Property Fully Non-magnetic
Machinability Poor (before or post-anneal)

Buyer FAQs – Hadfield Manganese Plates

Used in extreme wear applications like crushers, prisons, shot blasting machines, and earthmovers.

Yes, with special procedures — use low-hydrogen electrodes and preheat to 150°C.

Starts around 200 BHN and can go up to 550 BHN under continuous impact.

MTC with chemical and mechanical test reports, and third-party inspection (if required).

Crusher Plant in UAE

One of our clients operating 24×7 stone crushers in UAE reported a 3x increase in jaw plate life after replacing their AR500 liner with our Hadfield 12–14% Mn plate. Downtime was slashed, and impact performance stabilized even under heavy-duty boulders.
