What Are Steam Boilers and Why Are Specialized Steel Plates Required?

Steam boilers play a critical role across power plants, textile mills, sugar refineries, paper industries, and chemical processing. They generate high-pressure steam through combustion or electrical energy, and this steam powers turbines, sterilizes equipment, or supports thermal processes.

In these extreme thermal and pressure cycles, boiler-quality steel plates form the core of the boiler shell and firebox. The materials must offer:

  • Excellent creep resistance
  • High-temperature durability
  • Weldability with integrity under cyclic loading
  • Resistance to oxidation and scale build-up

This is why pressure vessel quality (PVQ) plates such as ASTM A516, SA516, IS 2002, and EN 10028 are widely used for steam boiler applications.

Mechanical Strength Requirements of Steam Boiler Plates

Steam boilers typically operate between 10 to 100 bar pressure and 150°C to 600°C temperature. Therefore, the plate must offer:

  • Yield Strength: 240 – 355 MPa
  • Tensile Strength: 410 – 620 MPa
  • Elongation: 22% – 25%
  • Impact toughness (Charpy V-notch): ≥27J at -20°C (for low-temperature service)

Grades such as SA 516 Gr 60 / 70, IS 2002, EN P265GH / P355GH, and A285 Gr C meet these criteria.

Chemical Composition for Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance

Low-carbon, fully killed steel with added manganese, silicon, and optional chromium-molybdenum alloys is ideal for resisting thermal stress and oxidation.

Typical chemistry (e.g. SA 516 Gr 70):

  • Carbon (C) – 0.27% max
  • Manganese (Mn) – 0.85–1.20%
  • Silicon (Si) – 0.15–0.40%
  • Sulphur & Phosphorus – ≤ 0.035%
  • Optional Mo/Cr for higher temperatures (e.g. A387 plates)

  • Stress relieving post-weld improves long-term service
  • Use low hydrogen electrodes to prevent cracking
