Table of Contents

What is SS 410 / 420 / 430 Stainless Steel?

These grades belong to the ferritic and martensitic stainless steel families, offering distinct performance characteristics based on chromium content, carbon level, and microstructure.

🔹 SS 410 – Martensitic Stainless Steel

  • Contains ~11.5–13.5% chromium
  • Hard and magnetic
  • Good wear resistance and moderate corrosion protection
  • Suitable for cutting tools, pumps, valves

🔹 SS 420 – Hardenable Martensitic Stainless Steel

  • High carbon (~0.15%) and chromium (~12–14%)
  • Can be hardened by heat treatment
  • Commonly used for surgical tools, knives, bearings

🔹 SS 430 – Ferritic Stainless Steel

  • Contains ~16–18% chromium, very low nickel
  • Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking
  • Good formability, low thermal expansion
  • Widely used for appliances, decorative trim, exhaust systems

All three grades are magnetic, with SS 430 being non-hardenable, and SS 420 offering the highest hardness post-treatment.

Applications of SS 410 / 420 / 430 Plates Across Industries

These stainless grades are preferred for cost-sensitive, wear-prone, or aesthetic metal applications, where high corrosion resistance is not critical but strength, finish, or fabrication ease is required.

Heat Resistance, Magnetism & Oxidation Behavior

Heat Resistance:

Grade Max Operating Temp (Dry Air)
SS 410 ~650°C
SS 420 ~700°C
SS 430 ~870°C

SS 430 has better thermal expansion control and retains form in oxidizing atmospheres.

  • All three grades are ferromagnetic in all conditions
  • SS 410/420: Retain magnetism post heat treatment
  • SS 430: Fully magnetic, ideal for induction cookware and engineering uses

Oxidation Behavior:

  • SS 430 performs best under cyclic oxidation due to high chromium
  • SS 410/420 require passivation or coating in corrosive environments

Fabrication, Welding & Machining Tips for SS 410 / 420 / 430

These grades can be processed using conventional stainless steel tooling, but require appropriate care based on hardness and grain structure.

Fabrication:

  • SS 430: Good formability; suitable for bending, drawing, press-forming
  • SS 410/420: May require preheating; better with shearing, stamping

Welding:

  • SS 430: Can be welded with ferritic-compatible filler (AWS E430)
  • SS 410/420: Weldable but prone to cracking without pre/post heat treatment
  • Avoid multi-pass welding or use low hydrogen electrodes for better joint strength

Machining:

  • SS 420 (annealed): Best machinability
  • Use rigid tooling, coolant, slow feeds
  • SS 410 and 420 offer strong edge retention for blades and gears
