Is AR 450 Weldable? — Complete Answer for Buyers & Engineers

Table of Contents

Yes, AR 450 steel is weldable, but with proper precautions.

AR 450 (Abrasion Resistant 450 BHN) is a hardened wear-resistant plate. Because of its high hardness and carbon content, direct welding without preheating can lead to cracking, brittleness, and reduced toughness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). That’s why weldability depends on:

Key Welding Guidelines for AR 450:

  1. Preheat Temperature: 150–250°C (depending on thickness)
  2. Low-Hydrogen Electrodes: Use E7018 or equivalent
  3. Interpass Temperature: Maintain within 200–250°C
  4. Post-Weld Cooling: Slow cooling recommended to avoid thermal stress
  5. Avoid Overheating: Excess heat can reduce hardness near the weld
  6. Edge Preparation: Use mechanical methods (grinding, not flame cutting)

Suitable Welding Processes:

  1. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  2. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW / MIG)
  3. Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Skipping preheat
  • Fast cooling after welding
  • Using incompatible filler materials
  • Welding large sections without stress relief

Applications Where Welding AR 450 is Common:

  • Bucket Liners
  • Bulldozer blades
  • Dump truck bed repairs
  • chute system in mining plants
