Boiler Plate Welding & Edge Prep Guide – A516, A387, DSQ, EN 10028 Plates

Table of Contents

Why Welding & Edge Preparation Matter in Boiler Plate Fabrication

Boiler and pressure vessel fabrication involves critical weld joints that must withstand high pressure, heat, and corrosion. Improper edge prep or weld sequencing can lead to:

  • Stress failure or cracking
  • Weld porosity or blowholes
  • Rework and costly downtime
This is why edge profiling and weldability are key concerns when selecting boiler-quality steel plates.

Weldability of Common Boiler Grades (A516, A387, EN, DSQ)

Boiler plates such as ASTM A516 Gr 60/70, A387 Gr 11/22, EN 10028 P265GH / P355NH, and DSQ plates are generally considered weldable under standard conditions.
However, their weldability depends on:

  • Plate thickness
  • Carbon equivalent (CE value)
  • Heat input and preheat
  • Cooling rate and restraint
Grade Weldability Preheat Required
A516 Gr 70 Excellent Yes, above 50mm
A387 Gr 11 / 22 Moderate (Cr-Mo) Yes (200–300°C)
EN P265GH / P355NH Good Preheat ≥ 25mm
DSQ (IS 8917) Excellent Not always required

Recommended Welding Parameters

Process Usage Remarks
SMAW (Stick) Field welding, maintenance Use low hydrogen rods (E7018)
GTAW (TIG) Root passes, thin sections Clean edges, inert shielding needed
GMAW (MIG/MAG) Production welding, shops Good for DSQ and A516 Gr 60/70
SAW (Submerged Arc) Thick plates, long seams High productivity, stable arc

Important: Always ensure low hydrogen electrodes, proper storage, and interpass cleaning to avoid hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) in pressure service plates.

Edge Preparation Techniques Based on Thickness

Thickness (mm) Edge Prep Type Welding Method
6–12 mm Square edge GMAW, SMAW
12–25 mm Single V / Bevel SMAW, SAW
25 mm & above Double V / U edge SAW, GTAW-SAW Combo

Tip: For Cr-Mo (A387) plates, always remove mill scale before welding and maintain slow cooling.

Preheat, Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT), and Stress Relief

Grade Preheat Temp PWHT Required? Remarks
A516 Gr 70 100–150°C Optional > 50mm Improves ductility
A387 Gr 11/22 200–350°C Yes (620–700°C) To avoid brittle welds
EN 10028 80–150°C Depends on code Follow EN 13445 / ASME Sect IX
DSQ Plates 50–100°C Not typically needed Excellent cold formability

Key Compliance Codes for Boiler Plate Welding

Ensure adherence to following codes based on application:

  • ASME Section IX – Welding Qualifications
  • IBR (Indian Boiler Regulation) – For all steam boilers in India
  • EN 13445 / EN 287 – Pressure vessel fabrication in EU
  • NACE MR0103 / TM0284 – For sour service (HIC-resistant welding)

Tips for Buyers & Fabricators

  • Always ask for bevelled-edge ready plates if thickness > 25mm
  • Request HIC-tested, UT-tested, and NACE-compliant plates for harsh service
  • For power plants or chemical tanks, insist on PWHT documentation and WPS/PQR approval
  • Use backing strips or ceramic tapes for root welds in thick Cr-Mo plates
  • Buy from plate suppliers who offer in-house edge profiling and welding consultanc

Our technical team assists fabricators in choosing the right weld process, consumables, and plate variant based on project need.

FAQs for Boiler Plate Welding & Edge Prep Guide

SAW with preheat and mandatory PWHT is ideal for thick Cr-Mo pressure plates.

Double V or U joint preparation is typically recommended for >25mm thickness.

Not always. It depends on the plate grade, thickness, and design code requirements.

Use low-hydrogen electrodes like E7018 or ER70S-6 based on base material.
