What is ASTM A572 Steel? Gr 50 & Gr 60 Explained

ASTM A572 is a high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) structural steel specification developed by ASTM International. It covers multiple strength levels (Grades 42, 50, 55, 60, and 65), with Grade 50 and Grade 60 being most commonly used.

  • Grade 50: Balanced strength and ductility with good weldability
  • Grade 60: Higher yield and tensile capacity, suited for demanding applications

Both grades offer minimum yield strengths of 345 MPa (Gr 50) and 415 MPa (Gr 60), making them reliable for demanding load-bearing environments.

Applications of A572 Gr 50 / Gr 60 in Construction & Heavy Fabrication

A572 plates are engineered for structural integrity and weight optimization. They’re commonly used in:

  • Bridge fabrication and highway structures
  • Transmission towers and telecom infrastructure
  • Pre-engineered buildings (PEBs) and industrial sheds
  • Cranes, trailers, lifting platform
  • Offshore bracings and wind turbine bases
  • Mining equipment and machinery frames
  • Heavy vehicle chassis and rail components

Their high strength-to-weight ratio helps reduce structural mass while maintaining load capacity.

Mechanical & Chemical Properties of ASTM A572 Plates

Property Grade 50 Grade 60
Yield Strength ≥ 345 MPa (50 ksi) ≥ 415 MPa (60 ksi)
Tensile Strength 450–620 MPa 485–650 MPa
Elongation (200mm) ≥ 18% ≥ 17%
Charpy Impact 27J @ 0°C (optional) 27J @ 0°C (optional)

Chemical Composition (Typical):

  • Carbon (C): ≤ 0.23%
  • Manganese (Mn): 1.35% max
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.04%
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.05%
  • Columbium-Vanadium (Nb/V): Used in controlled proportions to improve strength

These grades are commonly supplied in the as-rolled or normalized condition and offer excellent formability.

ASTM A572 Standard, Tolerance & Equivalent Grades

ASTM A572 is governed by the ASTM A572/A572M standard and categorized as a HSLA steel plate with higher strength and improved notch toughness. These plates are designed to meet structural performance in welded, riveted, or bolted constructions.

ASTM Grade Indian Equivalent EN Equivalent JIS Equivalent
A572 Gr 50 IS 2062 E350 EN 10025 S355J2 SM490YB
A572 Gr 60 IS 2062 E410 EN S420 SM490YA

A572 Gr 50 is one of the most widely accepted international equivalents for IS 2062 E350 and is suitable for global procurement and export-oriented projects.

Weldability, Machinability & Cutting Guidelines

A572 Gr 50 and Gr 60 offer superior fabrication flexibility due to:

  • Excellent weldability with all common processes – MIG, TIG, FCAW, SAW
  • Compatible with oxyfuel, plasma, and laser cutting
  • Machining possible with conventional turning, drilling, and milling tools
  • No need for preheat in thinner sections; low hydrogen practices recommended for heavy welding
  • Cold forming is possible with proper radius planning, especially in Gr 50

For best results, refer to AWS D1.1 welding codes or request TDS from our technical team.

A572 Gr 50 vs A36 / IS 2062 / EN 10025 – Which One to Choose?
