ASTM A514 is a high-strength, low-alloy steel plate produced through controlled quenching and tempering, delivering 100 ksi yield strength with a minimum tensile strength of 110 ksi. It is available in multiple grades such as A514 Grade B, E, F, H, M, and each is suited for different thicknesses and mechanical profiles.

It depends on thickness and grade. Below 38mm, it is generally weldable with low-hydrogen electrodes and without major preheat. Thicker sections may require preheat.
A514 Grade F or Grade B are most commonly used for crane booms, offering a balance of strength and ductility.
Technically, both have similar yield strengths (~690 MPa), but A514 has a different chemistry and higher tensile strength. They are functionally comparable for many applications.
