AR400 vs AR500 – Key Differences in Hardness, Usage & Durability

Table of Contents

What is the Difference Between AR400 and AR500?

AR400 vs AR500 – Which One Should You Choose?

AR400 and AR500 are both abrasion-resistant steel grades, but they serve different performance needs depending on how tough the job is.

Main Difference: Hardness & Wear Life

Property AR400 Plate AR500 Plate
Brinell Hardness (BHN) 360–440 BHN 480–550 BHN
Toughness More ductile, good for impact Harder, more resistant to abrasion
Weldability Easier to weld Needs preheat/post-weld treatment
Machinability Better machinability More difficult to machine
Applications Buckets, hoppers, liners Armor, crushers, mining, loaders

Real-Life Example

  1. AR400: Ideal for OEMs and constructors fabricating buckets, blades, and dump beds where some give is needed.
  2. AR500: Better suited for heavy-duty mining or ballistic protection, where higher hardness extends life significantly.

Quick Buyer Tip

If you need more impact resistance + easier welding, go with AR400.
If your priority is longer wear life + abrasion protection, AR500 will outperform.
