Machining & Bending DSQ Plates – A Fabricator’s Guide

DSQ (Dead Soft Quality) steel plates are widely chosen for tank making, chemical plant construction, and ducting because of their excellent formability, softness, and weld-friendly composition. As per IS 8917:1978, DSQ plates are ideal for cold working, hydraulic pressing, and precision bending, making them a preferred material in the fabrication of lined vessels and galvanized tanks.

How Do DSQ Plates Perform in Bending & Forming?

Due to their low carbon content and “dead soft” nature, DSQ plates can be:

  • Cold bent without cracking
  • Formed into tight radii
  • Rolled into cylindrical tanks
  • Used in deep drawing and press shaping

This makes them an asset for applications like pickling lines, electroplating tanks, and acid-resistant ductwork.

Mechanical Properties Relevant to Machining & Bending

Property Typical Value
Yield Strength 240 – 260 MPa
Tensile Strength 370 – 410 MPa
Elongation > 28%
Brinell Hardness ≤ 130 BHN
Machinability Excellent
Weldability Excellent

Why DSQ Plates Don’t Crack During Forming

Unlike high-tensile or structural grades, DSQ plates have a very low internal stress profile. This ensures:

  • Uniform thickness distribution after rolling
  • No micro-cracking along bends
  • Better edge quality during shearing
  • Seamless surface for post-fabrication lining (rubber/FRP)

Cutting DSQ Plates – Flame, Plasma, or Shearing?

DSQ plates can be cut using:

  • Shearing machines (for ≤10mm thickness)
  • Plasma or oxy-fuel cutting (for thicker gauges)
  • Laser cutting (if fine tolerances are needed)

Due to their softness, low tool wear and clean edges are common benefits, especially when preparing tank shell blanks or reinforcement plates.

Press Bending & Rolling Guidelines

Recommended minimum bend radius:

  • 1.5× thickness for 90° bends
  • 2× thickness for U-shape or deep-form tanks
  • No preheating required
  • Hydraulic press or manual bending allowed for ≤6mm

DSQ plates roll easily on mechanical and hydraulic rollers with zero spring-back, making them perfect for cylindrical acid tanks.

Machining Tips for DSQ Plates

  1. Use standard high-speed steel (HSS) tools
  2. No special coatings required
  3. Coolants optional – material doesn’t overheat
  4. Smooth surface after lathe/planing

These properties make DSQ suitable for jobs requiring edge milling, hole cutting, or surface machining prior to lining or welding.

Weldability & Edge Prep Before Assembly

  • No hard zones after welding
  • Low hydrogen electrodes preferred
  • Single V or square edge prep
  • 100% compatible with FRP/rubber lining post-weld
  • No need for interpass heating

Welding does not affect the soft property of DSQ, making it the ideal candidate for assembly of large vessel structures.

Quality Checklist Before Bending or Welding DSQ

  • Uniform surface finish
  • Ultrasonically tested for internal cracks
  • No lamination or waviness
  • Mill test certificate per IS 8917
  • No rust or oxide layer before lining
